I flipped my pillow over and tried to feel sleepy. My brain was going in circles. I kept telling myself: Don’t count on him. It was just one skating lesson.

But I also kept thinking of my dad’s serious expression as he showed me how to fall and how there wasn’t a trace of impatience in his face when I messed up the ollie, over and over. I thought of the way he had said “Another sesh tomorrow?” as I headed to bed. I’d nodded, and he turned away from me quickly, but not before I caught the big smile on his face.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about any of it. It was a relief to hear my phone buzz and see a text from Mom pop up.
